The term Sambo is an acronym for the Russian phrase "self-defense without weapons" (Sam-oborona Bes Orusyia) The USSR Committee of Sport accepted Sambo as the official combat sport of the Soviet Union in 1938. However, Sambo founders began their endeavor much earlier.
In 1918, Vladimir Lenin created Vseobuch: the organization responsible for training the Red Army. Joseph Stalin, at the time a string aid to Lenin, personally ordered a high ranking political official, named Voroshilov, to organize research into human combat. Not wishing to toil over such a "mediocre" endeavor, in 1923, Voroshilov formulated a group called the "Dynamo" to do the research.
Voroshilov then assembled a retainer of combat-experienced individuals to carry out this endeavor: Anatoly Kharlampiev, Victor Spiridinov and Vasili Oschepkov. Each of these individuals were assigned as combatives investigators and sent to travel to various countries to study the native combatives. Anatoly Kharlampiev traveled west and then south absorbing the Euro-Asian and Afro-Baltic combative systems. Vasili Oschepkov traveled to Japan. Victor Spiridinov traveled to Mongolia, China, and India to study the Mongol-Vedic martial traditions. Although returning sporadically to deposit information and engage in political endeavors, the course of this investigation lasted approximately ten years.
Sambo is recognized by the International Amateur Wrestling Federation as one of the four sports of world stature alongside Judo, Freestyle, and Greco-Roman wrestling.
Quite possibly the most identifiable trait that seperates Sambo from other arts, is the use of leglocks. In the original combat version, leglocks were used to disable the enemy on the battlefield. Leglocks are in modern times, a formidible weapon in Sub-wrestling and Mixed Martial Arts.
