Respect for the Warriors

02/13/2005

Any martial artist that has not read Musashi's Book of Five Rings really should take the time to do so. I don't mean the business person's edition either. I mean the version intended for Warriors.

One of the subjects touched on within his writings is his interpretation of the 4 classes of society. (Take into consideration that Musashi lived in the violent feudal era of Japan.) However, at the top of the classes were the warriors. They were above the farmers, the artisans, and the merchants. In those times, the Samurai had power over life and death for the other 3 classes in society. In these less chaotic and civilized times, roles have changed.

During my own personal martial arts career I have on a few occasions traveled overseas. Every time I have been amazed at how well I was received as a martial artist and instructor compared to my home in the U.S. Society has changed and warriors are merely gladiators in an arena instead of the Samurai with the power over life and death. Rather, today's warriors are controlled by the merchant. Even a Warrior has to eat and have a roof over his head.

Here in the U.S. it is the common misconception that all martial artists are thugs and brawlers. In other countries, particularly in Europe and Asia, the mainstream society understands that in order to be a great martial artist, one must be dedicated for many years of study. To them, this is viewed much like having a degree in medicine or law.

I hope, as do many other martial artists, that MMA events and other fighting events will someday soon be recognized in the U.S. as a place for dedicated, well trained athletes. I also hope that society here will recognize the time, energy, and education needed to become a great martial artist and respect us accordingly.
